Testimonials:

"Tom O'Brien's new book is an excellent demonstration of how an experienced technical trader puts things together.  He places heavy emphasis on volume, and shows how to combine that with more sophisticated concepts like Fibonacci contractions and expansions.  He includes other favorite charting tools like candlesticks, channels, gaps, and MACD.  Best of all, he shows how to put all of these tools together into a comprehensive trading plan that includes risk and money management guidelines.  Tom O'Brien's Timing the Trade isn't a book on technical theory.  It's a practical how-to trading manual written by an experienced trader.  It's a book that can be understood by beginners and appreciated by market veterans.  I found it to be an easy read and picked up some useful information all along the way."

Author of Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets and
Intermarket Analysis

"Tom O'Brien's Timing the Trade provides the reader with outstanding stock market coverage.  His book has a very wide range of subject matter and is written to not only introduce the reader to the world of technical analysis, but contains much material not seen anywhere else.  I especially commend him for the chapter on stops.  Contains a large number of easy to understand charts.  All in all, a fine book and I highly recommend buying it."

"He is more than qualified to take you through one of the very best market teaching manuals I have ever read."

"O'Brien's erudite coverage of Fibonacci numbers has never been better described.  I think that alone is worth the $88 price of the book."

Market Timer and Author of The Granville Market Letter

"There is a Japanese Samurai saying, "He whose ranks are united in purpose will be victorious."  Tom O'Brien's Timing the Trade brings together some of the most important elements to help you win your trading battles.  Tom reveals his favorite technical indicators like volume (which besides candles, is my most important indicator) but he goes beyond that.  Many books have technical indicators, but what good is having them if you don't know how to incorporate them into a trade?  Tom not only explains the technical signals but he goes the next step by showing how to use these tools to identify a potential trade and then set up the trade.  And he rounds out the picture by detailing the all important aspect of money management.  All in all, this is an easy to read book with valuable insights."

Steve Nison - President - www.candlecharts.com
Author of Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques

"Tom O'Brien's trademark enthusiasm and spirit shine through in this solid work.  Anyone employing technical analysis - or wanting to employ it - will learn from and enjoy this book, as several solid techniques are spelled out in detail.  Not only that, but Tom spends considerable time explaining the "why's" and "how's" of his trading methods - not just the numbers.  Whether novice or experienced, you're sure to improve your trading techniques with this book."

Finally a book on trading that makes perfect sense, June 10, 2006

Reviewer:

I had virtually given up on trading and was about to cancel this purchase but I figured what the heck. Boy am I glad I didn't cancel. This book has revolutionized the way I trade. I've been trading on and off for about 10 years, this year I decided to take it seriously, took several courses read more books and proceeded to continue losing.

I noticed in my trading that I had an idea of entry and exits but not with a high degree of confidence. I tended to be right on direction but wrong on timing both entry and exit. Well after this book my confidence is higher than it's ever been. I have just started trading using Tom's techniques and my problem now is that I need to trust my analysis. So far I have been kicking myself for not trusting my new method and as I said my confidence is increasing. I can honestly say for the first time that I believe a breakthrough is imminent.

Tom's style is the epitome of clarity and simplicity. He puts more actual meat (no fluff) in one chapter than you'll find in most books. I only wish this had come out 10 years ago!

This is by far the best book on trading I have ever read but the following have also helped to one degree or another in order of importance:

How I trade for a living - Gary Smith
Jesse Livermore: World's Greatest Stock Trader- Richard Smitten
High Probabilty Trading - Marcel Link
Pit Bull - Buzzy Schwartz
Market Wizards - Jack Schwager

3 Steps to Better Stock Chart Reading, March 14, 2006

Reviewer:

options-trading-resources.com "Steve" (Texas, USA)

The Fast Track to Better
Stock Market Chart Reading

1. Buy Timing the Trade - How Price & Volume Move Markets.

2. Listen to "The Tom O'Brien Show" on radio or download the podcast at www.tfnn.com.

3. Join The Tiger's Den and watch Tom read charts during his radio show www.tfnn.com.

Like many others, I used to plug in stock market symbols of all my favorite stocks at BigCharts.com and tried to make sense of all the different stock market charts. Then I found Tom O'Brien!

Seriously, I've read Technical Analysis books, and looked at hundreds (probably thousands) of stock market charts. Nobody makes it look as simple and teaches it as well as Tom.

The book is great and easy to read. But, it really all comes together when you listen to the radio show. An extra bonus I get from listening to the show are tips on great stocks from Tom's audience. For instance, a caller will call in and ask Tom about a certain stock or commodity. Tom will pull up the chart, give the current stock market quote and analyze chart. Tom will look at charts of dozens of stockmarket symbols during each show.

Best of all, Tom begins each segment with the view of several stock market indicators. It's great to watch in the Tiger's Den as Tom looks at the chart history of the stock market and finds key swing points and levels of support and resistance.

Some of the topics covered in the book include: the definition and importance of quality volume, how to read a candlestick stock chart, how to use Fibonacci ratios, setting up the trade, and risk and money management. I have adopted his strategies and consult a candlestick chart before investing in any stock.

Don't worry if you don't get The Tom O'Brien radio show in your market. Each show is archived and is available as a podcast at his website www.tfnn.com. If you want to see something really cool, sign up for The Tiger's Den where you can watch Tom in action. Members of the Tiger's Den get access to video analysis of the Tom O'Brien show archived each and every day after the show is completed. The Tiger's Den video actually shows Tom's computer screen as his callers give him their stock market symbols.

Take these 3 steps today and watch how quickly you become a better stock picker.

I thought that the book was easy to understand, but I did not find it particulary helpful. I think there are better books for most of the areas covered e.g. fibonacci, candlesticks, volume etc. Might be okay as a beginning primer, but I think there are better books for the money.

A must-read book for any stockmarket trader., January 23, 2006

This book covers the essential material one must know to trade successfully in the stockmarket.
It covers Candlestick,Volume Analysis,Confluence levels and things you need to know before you enter a
trade. It also cover's trend channels.
This book is very simple to read and is excellent for someone who knows little about trading stocks.
This book is helpful to trader's who consistently loose money in the market and don't understand why they made a bad trade.
I have read many books about trading stocks for the past 20 years. Most of them you can just throw out of the window.
This book is well written and I highly recommend it to anyone.

You don't need to buy many books to be a good trader. Some other books I have found to be very useful in my trading
career are the following:

* Technical Analysis of Stock Trends (7th Edition) by Robert Edwards and Magee.
* Technical Traders Guide to Computer Analysis of the Futures Markets by Charles Lebeau, David W. Lucas
* Stockpatterns for Daytrading by Barry Rudd
* Technical Analysis : Power Tools for Active Investors by Gerald Appel

Volume analysis is THE most important indicator for the decision making process of purchasing equities. I read the book several times and highlighted almost every page as each page had something important to remember. I have read many books on TA. Some books have filler pages full of horse fuffies and cow pucks. This book is straight forward and says it with the least amount of fluff and maximum efficiency. Don't let the number of pages fool you, this book is well worth it's price and then some! Thanks to the contents of this book, I made enough to buy a library of these books! Tom Obrien is awesome!

Tom has outdone himself with this version of Timing the Trade. The chapters are not too long and not too short...just right; easy to read with excellent visual examples. A very consistent system that relies on the simplest concept that drives the market...Supply and Demand....where they intersect....is the market in harmony relative to supply and demand.....brilliant. An excellent resource/supplement to the TFNN website and the radio/web show.

A must-have book for beginning or advanced traders, December 27, 2005

There are three stock market and trading books that I consider must-haves for anyone interested in trading stock markets:

* Stan Weinstein's Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets;

* Reminiscences of a Stock Operator;

and now

*Tom O'Brien's Timing the Trade.

Timing the Trade is an easy-to-read, instructive work teaching trading principles such as ABC theory, volume, fibonnacci and confluence and how to combine them to determine the optimal entry and exit points for your stock market trades.

Learning Tom's system using Timing the Trade teaches you how to remove the emotion from your trades, which in my case, has resulted in making me a much more successful trader.

I highly recommend Timing the Trade!

Tom O'Brien provides a complete system for trading the markets. He explains patiently and thoroughly where to buy, where to sell and how to manage high probablity trades. Through his Book (as well as his nationally syndicated Radio Show at tfnn.com) he takes traders by the hand and guides them through the process of executing great trades as well as the money management techniques required for success.

Timing the Trade is an absolute must for any trader. I have improved my trading performance several fold since finding Tom O'Brien.

Excellent Book, November 30, 2005

J. C. Clark "Clarky" (LA and Chicago)

Very few books on trading will lay out the author's methods, but this one does, and it does it in a very clear and concise manner.

Tom walks you through every step of the way with very easy to understand language and simple examples.

I highly recommend this book, especially for people looking for a place to get started.

A great manual on how to trade markets., November 22, 2005

Reviewer:

Peter Spurr (U.K.)

I found Timing The Trade to be a very well written, clear and concise work.
O' Briens's trading method uses volume and fibonacci techniques to create an easy to follow system in plain english and the book's conversational style is a joy to read.

The author has created a book which addresses all parts of a trade using his system amongst many other things you will learn :-

(i) How to find a setup for entry
(ii) How to define the risk/reward in the prospective trade
(iii) How to define your plan to exit (in a win or lose situation)

in short an illustrated manual of how to plan the trade and then trade the plan.

An excellent book that uses a 'hands on' approach to guide you through the market maze.

Gateway To Better Trading, November 8, 2005

Reviewer:

Gregg Rainone (Florida)

Tom O'Brien's TIMING THE TRADE is a gateway to the world of Fibonacci-based financial market trading and the rich 100-plus year legacy of American Technical Analysis, dating back to Jesse Livermore, Richard Wyckoff, Gerald Loeb, Richard Schabacker, Edwards and Magee, Jack Dreyfuss, William O'Neil, Joe Granville, John Murphy, Steve Nison, and right up to the present day stock market swing low of October 13th, 2005 -- which Tom O'Brien correctly called to the day on his daily radio show.

In particular, Tom O'Brien's "Swing Volume" methodology is among the most compelling technical trading criteria I've seen in over 120 financial market books studied to date.

Tom O'Brien also addresses classic technical channels, candlestick charting, the use of indicators, and other aspects of technical chart analysis -- along with ALL IMPORTANT money management techniques -- to compose a very succinct, practical, and robust approach to trading markets of all kinds in all time frames.
